Free Radicals...The Bad Guys
Hello there, Beautiful People!
Have you heard of the term "free radicals"? Chances are you have! Let me give you a brief overview of free radicals and how they pertain to your body.
The premise of my philosophy is basing your diet around colorful, protective and phytonutrient-dense foods. Read on to find out why...
What the heck are "Free Radicals”?
Free radicals are molecules that are unstable due to the fact that they are missing an electron. Because of their problematic chemical structure, they are always on the lookout for a healthy cell that can provide them with the electron they are missing. When the free radicals achieve their goal of stealing a healthy cells' electron, they create another free radical cell and this perpetuates a harmful chain-reaction.
Uncontrolled free radical production can destroy our cells and cell membranes, which ultimately wreaks havoc inside of our bodies. This can lead to inflammation and chronic disease progression, including cancer, premature aging and heart disease.
When we are trying to beautify ourselves from the inside out – we simply don’t have any time for that!
What causes free radicals?
Free radicals occur naturally as byproducts from processes such as cellular reactions, metabolism and digestion. But, in this day and age, our environment, diet, and lifestyle largely contribute to free radical activity in our bodies.
Here are some lifestyle factors that promote free radical generation:
-Diet high in saturated fat, salt, sugar, and animal products
-Pesticide residues in food
-Chemicals in meat
-Tobacco and alcohol consumption
Antioxidants: The Antidote!
These are the good guys. Phytochemicals and antioxidants are the heroes in our body. They donate one of their electrons to the free radicals, which makes the free radicals stable molecules. Since avoiding all exposure to free radicals is impossible, it's very important that we consume a colorful, phytonutrient-rich diet.
Our bodies produce some endogenous (coming from within) antioxidants which help fight off free radical and oxidative damage. But all too often, our bodies are bombarded with toxins from a poor diet and the environment, leaving us in great need of exogenous (outside of the body...think, healthy food & beverages) antioxidants.
We are susceptible to the harmful effects of these molecules when our bodies have higher levels of free radicals than antioxidants. Therefore, your diet must include phytonutrient-dense foods on a daily basis. This equips your body with nutrients that reduce any power free radicals hold over cells.
So...why would we choose to eat things or engage in behaviors that promote free radical activity when we know the consequences? I’ll spare us that psychological explanation.
I, instead, ask . . .knowing this – why wouldn’t we want to arm ourselves with the best protection possible against the free radical stress that wrecks our health & skin? It's a No-Brainer!
Stay tuned for more ideas on how to protect your body and beautify yourself from the inside out!
Until next time...
